THE TSUNAMI WE NEED

Of all the tsunami pictures I have seen, this one, a wall of water 20 feet high sweeping into Patong Bay, Thailand, best visualizes its horrendous destructive power. What we need now is one like this targeting Turtle Bay, Manhattan to sweep away the United Nations.

A favorite website of mine is The Diplomad, authored by anonymous conservative Republican FSOs (Foreign Service Officers, i.e., career diplomats) at the State Department. In a January 1, 2005 post entitled “UN Death Watch,” they revealed:

Well, we’re heading into Day 7 of the Asian quake/tsunami crisis. And the UN relief effort? Nowhere to be seen except at some meetings and on CNN and BBC as talking heads. In this corner of the Far Abroad, it’s Yanks and Aussies doing the hard, sweaty work of saving lives.

Three days later, January 4, as American aid was pouring in to Sumatra via the US military and USAID workers, The Diplomad reported:

We’re now into the tenth day of the tsunami crisis, and in this battered corner of Asia the UN is nowhere to be seen — unless you count at meetings, in five-star hotels, and holding press conferences.

Aussies and Yanks continue to carry the overwhelming bulk of the burden, but some other fine folks also have jumped in: e.g., the New Zealanders have provided C-130 lift and an excellent and much-needed potable water distribution system; the Singaporeans have provided great helo support; the Indians have a hospital ship taking position off Sumatra. Spain and Netherlands have sent aircraft with supplies.

The UN continues to send its best product, bureaucrats.

I’ve despised the UN since I was in college back in the 60s. I even put a bumper sticker on my VW camper announcing: CommUNism. But in truth I always thought trying to get “The UN out of the US and the US out of the UN” was a hopeless cause. No longer.

The corruption, incompetence, and uselessness of the United Nations has finally become terminal. But what is going to be the final death blow is not the Oil For Food (OFF) scandal, the greatest scam the world has ever known. For notice that statement is in the past tense. The death blow comes when it dawns of the Congressfolk that appropriate the US “donations” to the UN (40% of the UN budget) that a scam is coming that will leave OFF in the dust:

The Kyoto Carbon Con.

At least OFF involved actual stuff: Saddam was selling something real, oil. The scam was in the secret commissions. The Kyoto Carbon Con involves nothing but an imaginary fiction called “carbon credits” — billions of dollars paid for absolutely nothing real at all. It works like this.

The signatory countries to the Kyoto Treaty agree to reduce their C02 emissions to below those of 1990. Companies in these countries deemed to be exceeding the imposed limits have to pay heavy fines. They can get out of these fines, however, by purchasing (at much less cost than the fines) “carbon credits” from signatory countries whose emissions fall well below the limits, or – get this one – who are exempt from any limits at all. I am not making this up.

It’s easy for Russia to have tons of carbon credits to sell, because its C02 emissions collapsed after 1990 along with the collapse of the Soviet economy. Putin signed Kyoto expecting Euro companies to pay him some $10 billion for imaginary “credits” so they need not reduce their C02 output a whit nor pay a single euro in fines.

China is exempt from the Kyoto emission limits – yet it is a treaty signatory. Why would the Chinese sign a treaty that doesn’t apply to them? Because they will now threaten to build massive numbers of highly-polluting coal power plants – then either demand billions in carbon credits for not building them, or billions in World Bank-UN subsidies to pay the cost of making the coal plants hyper-efficient and non-polluting.

And just who is going to be overseeing the worldwide sale of the carbon credits, and handling the billions involved? Yep, the boys in Turtle Bay.

The Congressman who has led the charge to defund the UN is Ron Paul of Texas. He will soon introduce, yet again, legislation to do so for the 109th Congress. This time, it can pass. Remember that Congress holds the purse strings, not the Senate. The Senate can withhold approval of a Congressional appropriation, but if Congress doesn’t authorize an appropriation in the first place, the Senate cannot order the money spent. To support Ron Paul’s bill to defund the UN, you can contact him at:

With luck, this may be the year for a Congressional earthquake creating a tsunami big enough to wash the UN from our shores.
