NOTHING LEFT

Who are your heroes? Those of us on the right have plenty to choose from. Two who come first to my mind are Ronald Reagan and John Wayne. I’m sure it would be easy for you to list others.

What about the heroes of the left? Remember when the left idolized Mao Tse Tung, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Cong, Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas? That’s history now, sad and gone. Castro and Ortega are still around, but they’re has-beens just like the rest.

What did all their heroes have in common – what was it that made them heroic in the eyes of the left? Not that they were Communists (which they were), but that they hated and were fighting against America. The left’s insuperable problem now is that the world’s primary America-haters can’t be their heroes. They can’t idolize Moslem terrorists. Not even Noam Chomsky can wear an I Love Osama t-shirt. No campus revolutionary can replace his passé Che poster with one of Osama. Such embracing of undeniable evil is too much even for them.

Thus the lefties no longer have any heroes. All they have left is their hate, their hate for America, for Western Civilization, for white males – which is distilled into hate for one white male in particular: George W. Bush.

Remember, that the emotional fuel of all forms of leftism is envy and the fear of it – that liberalism is not a political philosophy but a psychological strategy to avoid being envied. The fear of envy – the ancient primitive fear of the Evil Eye – is the source of liberal masochistic guilt, the unceasing liberal debasement of America, the constant liberal threnody of apology for America’s success, power, and prosperity.

Here we find the source of Bush-hatred – for there is no one whom people tortured by the fear of envy hate more than the person who isn’t afraid of it.

George Bush is the man who refuses to apologize. He refuses to apologize for America’s sins. He refuses to admit that America incited the terrorists to attack her. He refuses to be defensive, and instead has the inexcusable arrogance to actually go on the attack against the terrorists. He shows no remorse, no guilt, no embarrassment. There is no one whom the left hates more than this.

It takes a man of astoundingly strong psychological strength to reject the demands of the envious. Warren Buffett has succumbed. George Soros has been driven over the edge of sanity. John Kerry is the Anti-Bush precisely because he promises to kowtow to the French, give the United Nations a veto over our national security, and apologize to Third World dictatorships around the world for America’s wealth.

In Joel Wade’s The Virtue of Happiness column this week, he discusses other sources of the crazed Bush-hatred of the American Left. This hatred is reaching truly pathological levels. It is critical that patriotic, rational Americans understand the sources of this hatred. Ronald Reagan was hated by the left for his fearlessness towards both the Soviet Union and the envy of those who wished America ill. It is the same with George Bush.

Their courage exposes liberal cowardice. For liberals, this is unforgivable. This is why George Bush is a hero to me and should be to all Americans. For those who love America and have contempt rather than fear regarding those who envy her, there is a plethora of heroes. But for liberals, there is nothing left.
