HOW DID THE ANCIENT GREEKS KNOW WHAT AMERICA’S FATE IS?

“Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first drive insane.”

It’s a proverb of the Ancient Greeks so old it predates their great poets such as Sophocles (496-406 BC) who quotes a version of it in Antigone. They applied it to individuals, especially kings.

Yet it applies with equal force to countries, societies, nations, and civilizations. Turn the pages of a historical atlas to see the evidence, as they emerge, rise, flourish, subside, then vanish from history – century after century for thousands of years, all over the world.

This terrible truth is being applied to America today.

America has been slowly going insane for many years – at least since the presidency of Woodrow Wilson 100 years ago.

The insanity accelerated during FDR’s destruction of the Constitution, subsided with the incredible heroism it took to win World War II, almost vanished during the 50s, reemerged with LBJ’s Great Society fascism and the social lunacy of the 60s, and apotheosized with Jimmy Carter.

Ronald Reagan’s heroic presidency was the sanest of the 20th century, restoring America’s belief in itself, reviving its economy, and winning the Cold War. Instead of a virtuous celebration like we had in the 50s, Americans got morally drunk and elected Bill Clinton.

We came within the thinnest whisker imaginable from getting an impossibly destructive Algore presidency. With W, we got a good decent man determined to protect America, yet could not with sufficient force, nor was he able to halt the growth of Leviathan or the concomitant avalanche of vulgarity permeating our society.

Then came the truly insane – the election of Zero. There is a now-famous quote – attributed to many but its author is so far unknown – that sums up the real horror of Americans freely electing a man who wants God to damn America:

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

For seven long years have Americans suffered under the Curse of Zero, a curse they brought upon themselves. The only hope was that “this too shall pass,” that Americans would regain their sanity and choose a president capable of restoring our rule of law, our Constitution, and our moral decency.

That hope is now being dashed. The reason is that the above quote applying to Zero could apply equally to Donald Trump.

He is a crude lout epitomizing the vulgarity of our blemished culture – publicly calling Megyn Kelly a “bimbo” being but one of a legion of examples.

He has no conservative principles whatever, just advocating like any other cheap politician whatever he thinks will get him votes, from ethanol subsidies to abortion to substance-free bromides like “make America great again.”

So let me make it clear: yes, I consider conservative support for Trump to be a form of insanity, taking leave of one’s senses. It is allowing destructive rage and frustration exploding out of one’s amygdala to override one’s capacity for rationality.

The good news is that his support has a hard ceiling of no more than one-third of the electorate at most. Which means that his chances of actually being elected president are nil, particularly if the Dems come to their senses and bump the PIAPS and the socialist geezer off politically, and insert Biden in their place.

The bad news is that with the plethora of Pub candidates splitting up the anti-Trump primary votes, he may gain the nomination with just that one-third of support. Which virtually guarantees a Dem successor to Zero.

Will Durant’s observation on “Why Rome Fell” applies, he noted, to the entire sweep of human history:

“A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within.”

I am writing this in a former British hill station called Ooty in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India. Note the key word in that last sentence: former.

The Brits created a marvelously beautiful civilized place here. Indeed, they created India itself out of a multitude of statelets run by various rajas, shahs, and warlords. Today the British Empire is long gone, vanished into history. Britain still exists, but only as a shadow of its former self.

This can so very easily happen to America. America will not be conquered by Moslems or EMP attacks or illegal immigrants or any external force, however much of a genuine threat they are. America will only be destroyed from within – indeed, it is being destroyed, by her own people.

If conservatives allow themselves to become just as insane as those who have and presently are contributing to that destruction, then the Ancient Greeks will have presciently predicted America’s fate. It is not yet too late to prevent their prediction coming true – but the window of opportunity for doing so is closing fast.
