EVERNOTE

Have you heard of this little applet called Evernote? It is a great little utility that can store your places of interest, images and information  on any platform or device. It also makes it accessible plus searchable at anytime from anywhere.

For instance, you find yourself at an airport parking lot and you will be gone for several weeks.  Just take your cell phone and snap an image of your parking spot with row etc.   Or you are browsing the web and are on a site that you do not want to forget, like TTP. Just capture the page or url and send it to Evernote.

Perhaps you are at an unusual event and want to record information about the gathering – just record it and send it to Evernote.  Business cards, wine labels, to do lists and many other possibilities are at your fingertips.

The slickest thing about Evernote is that it searches text within images  So if you have three dozen business cards imaged on the site, you can search through them for your targeted info.

Evernote has a webclipper, a small applet you drag from their site to your browser's link bar. Once you are signed into your account it is easy for you to utilize the "Clipper" which will let you take portions or  complete web pages. You may upload audio notes and listen to then anytime from anywhere.

One of the most appealing things about Evernote is that it is free for 40MB monthly upload allowance. This free account includes up to 20,000 text notes, 400 mobile snapshots,  270 web clips40 audio notes or 11 high-resolution photos.

The premium edition allows 500Mb uploads a month and costs $5.00/month or $45.00/ year.  Both editions work with Windows Mobile or Macintosh including the iPhone.

To avail yourself of this product and to sign up for a free account  go here: Evernote.

It was back in June that I wrote briefly in a TTP article about Cloud Computing called Iphones and Wikis. Well, Cloud Computing has made the news  recently because of major service disruptions at Google, Amazon and Citrix.

Google's email went down twice within a two week period. Amazon's Simple Storage Service was taken down for 8 hrs within the last month and Citrix GotoWebinar was unavailable for awhile. Point being it might not be a prudent thing to have all your data in one cloud.

Bits ‘n pieces:

For an interesting look at Victorian gadgets go here How the Victorians did gadgets.

Apple Computer has had some recent faux pas with its newly renamed service MobileMe. There have been disconnects, lost email and general trauma for users who purchased the $99.00 service.

Also the iPhone 3G entry into the cellular marketplace has not gone entirely smooth. Many users report having difficulty holding onto a 3G connection and when they do,  it often results in dropped calls. At first some were blaming AT&T, but it turns out to be a global problem.

Some industry experts suspect that  the broadband signal processing between the antennae and amplifier may be the culprit. It sometimes happens when the 3G is switching from 3G to another network.

Intel along with its Promoter Group is working on a 3.0 USB for superspeed USB that will deliver rates of 600MB per second. The other vendors in this group are HP, AMD, Texas Instruments and Microsoft. This is a bump up in speed considering that USB 2 cruises at 480 MBper second.

That's it for this week.
