STERILIZING SEWER CITY

With people dying from infected water in New Orleans, which won’t be drained for weeks, it is critically important to disinfect the flood water as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The Army Corps of Engineers has many years of institutional experience at safely chlorinating sewer water. They can scale up that experience for the “Sewer City” that New Orleans has become.

Chlorine is a standard treatment for disinfecting sewage. It would take a few railroad tank cars of liquid chlorine for the job. The chlorine would be transferred with pumps used by municipal water companies throughout the US into standard tanks holding one ton (2,000 lbs) liquid chlorine used by municipal chlorination plants.

These tanks would be placed into boats with a tube from the tank releasing the chlorine into the water near the propeller for dispersion.

It would take approximately $1 million of chlorine plus transport costs to raise the flood waters in New Orleans to a chlorination level to that of a municipal swimming pool.

This would not only sterilize the water but it would kill the mold that will otherwise destroy thousands of flooded New Orleans homes. Chlorinating the flood waters would thus save hundreds of millions if not billions in rebuilding costs.

All the supplies and equipment for such a chlorination project are readily available. The cost will be minimal and the savings immense. Once the Army Corps of Engineers is given the green light, Sewer City can be effectively sterilized within 72 hours.

This information is currently being circulated through the Pentagon’s E-Ring, and several Congressman are requesting it be acted upon. The environmentalists of course will do their best to get in the way.
